3 Ways To Beating Bloating During Menopause

During this ‘Weekly Wisdom’ I’m focusing on how to beat bloating during the menopause.

What Causes It

Bloating is one of the most frequently experienced menopause and perimenopause symptoms and is often caused by a change in oestrogen levels. Many women can gain weight and feel bloated around the time of the menopause. It can be hugely uncomfortable causing tightness in the abdominal area. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce bloating at the time of the perimenopause and menopause.

My Top Tips

1. Consume magnesium rich foods

You require nutrients to help your brain chemistry and allow your hormones to function. Magnesium is one of the most common deficiencies. Between 50 to 80% of women of childbearing age are in short supply of it and this gets progressively worse as you get older. You do not store magnesium in your body, so if you are deficient then you need to make sure you’re consuming magnesium-rich foods and perhaps take supplements to help the muscles in your gut.

2. Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly and staying hydrated will help to relieve bloating and keeping your gut functioning.

3. Try reducing your wheat and bran intake

When you have low levels of nutrients and the brain isn't working normally it perceives certain foods as a toxin such as wheat and bran. Antibodies which are chemicals in your system that flush out the so-called toxin and it can cause you to gain weight because it’s causing your body to retain fluid. If you come off wheat and bran you should notice that you ’ll pee the fluid out and you won’t be as bloated.
