Why Do We Get Hot Flushes At The Time Of Menopause?

I am often asked: Why am I having hot flushes during the menopause and what are they?

What Is Happening

With this in mind, this week my blog explains why as many as three-quarters of women going through the menopause will get hot flushes and night sweats.

It is important to know what’s going on in your body when you have a hot flush and how to overcome them. You can control them and take charge of your thermostat again.

What Has Changed At Menopause

During the menopause two things going on that are different from other times of your life:

  1. First of all, your nutrient levels take a nosedive. As you get older your levels get in short supply and particularly as you go through perimenopause.

  2. Secondly, your oestrogen levels start to fall around the time of the menopause and perimenopause. When you’re born you’ve got millions of eggs in your ovaries, as you get older then amount fall, and tails off completely as you head for the menopause. Your brain tries to kick-start your ovaries to produce more oestrogen, so sends a thermal surge through your body causing the hot flush.

Action Plan

To eliminate thermal surges you need to:

  • Make sure that you’re in good nutritional shape.

  • You can also consume naturally occurring oestrogen in the form of foods, in particular things like soy, flaxseeds and supplements that contain red clover.

  • Doing regular relaxation has shown to reduce flushes by as much as 50% or 60%.

  • There are also clothes you can wear. Become have created a range of tank tops and pants that absorb moisture. You can use them as short-term aid while you’re getting your symptoms under control.
